I noticed a nice play on time. In verse 1 is οι γινωκοτες, a perfect active participle. Thus, this letter is written to those with a finished prior experience of “having known the truth.”
Next is verse 2, this truth, a present active participle, is remaining in these Christians, presently and continuously.
Next is verse 3, moving to the future, where John has the assurance that these believes will be (future indicative) experiencing God’s grace, mercy, peace in truth and love.
After having covered the entire history and future of these Christians, John moves to the present and wants to address those “walking in the truth” another present active participle, περιπατουντας.
Put this together with the above blog on noun adjective word order, and we see that John is writing to a group of successful believers, but John sees problems coming, and perhaps already there.
